The Firehouse Arts Center is excited to feature the work of Jean Batchelder on the Nancy Thompson Memorial Wall from January through March 2026. Featuring approximately 15 of the artist’s representative watercolor works, this presentation will include small to medium-format landscapes and still lifes. Utilizing techniques of subtractive painting and watercolor on yupo paper, this presentation demonstrates the artist’s mastery of the water-based medium.

The artist has released the following statement in light of her solo exhibition:

My work is all about my response to nature, whether a misty sunrise or flaming sunset, a rocky cliff or cascading waterfall, flora or fauna. My emotions may lead me to present a realistic rendering of whatever captured my attention, or I may express my impressions using exploration and abstraction. I hope to draw the viewer into the heart of the painting with my integration of light and color.

I am an avid walker and hiker. You may see me in the neighborhoods, on local trails, and at area parks any morning. I often walk alone; it is my meditative time, an opportunity to recharge my introverted psyche. This time prepares me for the day ahead. I absorb the scenes and sounds of the great outdoors. Things that hold my interest get photographed, and I use those photos as references for studio painting. Very often, my watercolor paintings reflect the image realistically. Other times, what caught my attention is more an impression than anything – then I may choose to create a less detailed piece that expresses my emotional response. You will see this in the vineyard paintings that are done with watercolor on yupo paper. Yupo is a polypropylene surface, plastic. Imagine oil on water – painting with watercolors on this surface allows me to let the piece dictate where it needs to go as the pigments interact with each other for impressionistic effects. Lifting pigment back to the white of the surface is simple, and detail can be achieved with rich thicker pigment.

My walks and hikes, and the resulting paintings, are presented in my Morning Walk series. The pieces on display here are but a few of the dozens I have created since moving to Livermore two years ago. I plan to continue adding to the series and will be exhibiting new pieces as opportunities arise.
