The Firehouse Arts Center is excited to present the solo exhibition of Orlonda Uffre, Visual Passages. Her show coinciding with Black History Month in February, Uffre’s artistic practice places emphasis on the African diaspora and her personal connection to it. Featuring approximately 20 works of acrylic, oil pastel, and mixed media, this exhibition will be on view until March 2, 2024.

The artist has released the following statement regarding her exhibition at the Firehouse Arts Center.

I find inspiration everywhere from nature, to dreams, to the cultural environment of the African diaspora, and the politics of our history. Perhaps this is why my creative output is eclectic.

My origins incorporate Brooklyn, New York and the African Caribbean diaspora associated with it. Although very much an American, my mother’s Caribbean ways have forever permeated my sense of self, my thoughts, and my art.

When I begin a painting, I first think about what I want to express for myself and then what it might mean to the outside world. Although it seems as if contemporary and modernist conventions are rules that have shaped the language of art, I don’t want to have to shock, titillate or confuse people to be considered relevant or interesting in this ongoing art dialogue. I believe it’s important to recognize and validate one’s own voice. The internal dialogue about what I’m expressing is sometimes punctuated by thoughts and questions specific to art in a multicultural world, or multicultural art in a conceptual context.”

Biography

Orlonda Uffre began her career as an artist when she was accepted to the High School of Art & Design in New York City and studied with Alvin Hollingsworth at the Art Students League in New York. Uffre completed her MFA in Creative Inquiry program at the California Institute of Integral Studies, which represents the core values and positive goals which symbolize a spiritual, feminist, and life-affirming educational institution, committed to the arts.

During the years between New York and California, her artistic trajectory was punctuated by her activities as a founding organizer of the Women’s InterArt Center in New York, and as a founding organizer and Artistic Director for Brava! for Women in the Arts, in San Francisco California. Most recently, she had taken the role as Lead Curator for Art of the African Diaspora (to which she coined the name), at the Richmond Art Center, and at various Satellite exhibits. Uffre has served as curator and juror for multiple arts and culture organizations including the Women’s Foundation, AfroSolo Arts Festival, Vida Gallery of the Women’s Building, and the Sargent Johnson Gallery.

The artist has exhibited her paintings and photographs throughout the United States including shows at PCOG Gallery in New York, Limner Gallery (New York), MarketWatch (San Francisco, CA), the San Francisco African American Historical & Cultural Society (Fort Mason, CA), the Commonwealth Club of California, Bomani Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Joyce Gordon Gallery (Oakland, CA), Thelma Harris Gallery (Oakland, CA), the Fort Smith Arkansas Convention Center, the National Steinbeck Center (Salinas, CA), and the Marin Community Foundation, (Novato, CA).

She was honored by the United States State Department’s Art in Embassies Program, which chose her paintings for the Ambassadorial Residence in 2001 -2003 in Maputo, Mozambique and was a featured artist and interviewed by the International Museum of Women in 2008.

Uffre has also exhibited her art broadly throughout the United States in New York, Chicago, Arkansas, and Washington D.C. In 2009, she was a featured artist and interviewed for the International Museum of Women’s online project, “Exhibiting You.”

Additional awards were garnered from Touchstone Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Richmond Art Center in Richmond, CA and from the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Ill. Her photography was included in the MOAD Stories Project, capturing the aftermath of Katrina, entitled “Shelter from the Storm” – on the MOAD Stories Project website “I’ve Known Rivers.”

Most recently, she has curated exhibitions at Laney College June Steingart Gallery, and the Abrams Claghorn Gallery in Albany.
