Before the sun rose, on a cold January morning, we watched as the birds awoke from their slumber at the vast sanctuary of Basque del Apache, New Mexico. A migration stopover site for waterfowl, it provides uniquely beautiful visual landscapes. Photography was my first artistic passion and an opportunity like this was a treasure. Now oil painting lets me go beyond a photo, beyond the constraints of natural light and color, to a place where I can express the joy and beauty of the experience. I can add and subtract effects that may not have been together in the photo but were all present.
