A two-time Juno Award winner who was called the “Yo-Yo Ma of banjo” by the Globe and Mail, Stone performs an eclectic array of music inspired by folk traditions from around the world. His Firehouse Arts Center performance will include selections from his latest album, “Room of Wonders”, which features music from Norway, Sweden, Bulgaria, Brazil, Italy and North America. Highlights are a movement from Bach’s French Suite, a Moorish sword-fighting dance and Stone’s own “lush, edgy” originals.
Stone draws inspiration for his music from varied disciplines such as Japanese poetry, Brazilian literature and instruments found while traveling in remote Malian villages. He is influenced by diverse artists such as Anouar Brahem, Bill Frisell, and Toumani Diabaté.
Stone’s other award-winning album, “Africa to Appalachia”, both departs from and honors the banjo’s long role in world music. He embarked on that project with the knowledge that the hide-covered instrument with an “extra” drone string known as the banjo actually originated in West Africa. He was particularly curious about the music that may not have made it across the ocean on slave ships headed west from Senegal and Mali in the 1600s. The album is a musical collaboration with singer and kora maestro, Mansa Sissoko.
